Overview

Dr. Justin Ruths graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Rice University (Houston, Texas) in 2004. He then received a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University (New York, New York) in 2006. Subsequently he spent 2006-2011 at Washington University in Saint Louis where he received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Systems Science and Applied Mathematics. He was a founding faculty member as an Assistant Professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design in the Pillar of Engineering Systems Design for five years. In 2016, Dr. Ruths joined the faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Systems Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Ruths’ research has focused on leveraging control theory to large scale systems, in most cases deeply intertwined with real world problems. His recent work has aimed to quantify the capabilities of attackers in the context of cyber-physical systems. Dr. Ruths’ research has been published in top engineering journals as well as broad-range, high-impact journals such as Science and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which describe the control properties of networked systems. Further work collaborates with natural and medical scientists to cast their goals as optimal control problems.
